Cleanup 2012 @ Montefiore Cemetery

Sunday May 6 @ 10:30 am:  A yearly spring cleanup sponsored by the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society and the Montefiore Cemetery Association brings participants from Jewish communities around the state to this historic cemetery.

The annual cleanup serves not only to keep the cemetery in good condition, but to foster awareness of Jewish history in northern New Mexico and ensure the continuity of the Jewish presence in Las Vegas.

RSVP (505) 348-4471 or admin@nmjhs.org

Ted Herburger, the Cemetery custodian, is "work manager".  This year he wants to work on the low stone wall that surrounds the Cemetery.  For people who don't want to haul rocks, there are many less strenuous jobs, such as raking, picking up litter, walking thru the graves, sitting on a rock, planting flowers, talking and listening to people.

Noel Pugash will offer prayers and lead us in a short discussion.  Then the Las Vegas Cemetery Society provides us with a simple, but grand picnic.  Everything is outside, but usually the weather cooperates.  There will be a porta potty.  Bring water, of course.

Directions to Montefiore Cemetery:
  1. From Albuquerque and Santa Fe, take I-25 north toward Las Vegas.
  2. Take exit 343; at the end of the ramp turn left onto Business Route I-25
  3. At about 0.6 mile, turn left onto 329 / New Mexico Avenue / Church Street.
  4. At about 1.6 mile, turn left onto Mora Street.
